Thank you for your interest in participating in the 2019 Southwest Idaho Regional Spelling Bee! Here are answers to some questions you may have about the spelling bee. Don’t see the information you are looking for? Please email Cece Gassner at email@example.com with your question(s).
My child is being home-schooled. Is he or she eligible to participate in the Southwest Idaho Regional Spelling Bee?
Generally speaking, each student in the 3rd through 8th grades in Ada, Adams, Boise, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Owyhee, Payette, Valley or Washington County in Idaho who has not reached his or her fifteenth birthday before August 31, 2018 is welcome and eligible to participate in the regional spelling bee. We encourage you to review the full list of eligibility requirements to participate in the bee. To register your child(ren), please visit the Scripps Spelling Bee website starting August 22, 2018.
If you do not live in one of the above ten counties, please visit the Scripps Spelling Bee website’s database of local bees to see if there is a different spelling bee that includes your geographic area.
Is there a registration fee?
Yes. Registration opens August 22, 2018. The early bird registration fee for home school families is $110 from August 22 to October 15, 2018. The regular registration fee is $185 from October 16 to December 16, 2018. Families will not be allowed to register after December 16, 2018. Unfortunately, the registration fee and deadlines are established by the Scripps Spelling Bee and Boise State University is unable to waive or discount the fees or move these deadlines.
Payment of the registration fee for a home schooling family allows every child in your family who is being home schooled and who meets all of the eligibility requirements established by Scripps to participate in the Southwest Idaho Regional Spelling Bee.
If you are a part of a home schooling association/co-op/group, the registration fee for the association/co-op/group is $160 through October 16, 2018 and is $226 from October 16 through December 16, 2018. The association/co-op/group would determine a single champion to advance to the Southwest Idaho Spelling Bee to represent that association/co-op/group.
Proof of residency in one of the above ten counties will be required to be shown at the regional spelling bee.
Is there any additional cost for my child(ren) to participate?
No. You may incur some costs to travel to Boise for the regional spelling bee; however, there is no additional fee that your child will be asked to pay. Additionally, if your child becomes the Southwest Idaho Regional Spelling Bee champion, Boise State will pay the airfare, hotel and certain other related costs for your child and a parent or guardian to attend the Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in late May or early June of 2019.
How can I help my child(ren) to prepare?
Scripps has put together some resources to help students prepare for the spelling bee.
When is the Southwest Idaho Regional Spelling Bee?
The Southwest Idaho Regional Spelling Bee will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 starting at 10:00 a.m. in the Stueckle Sky Center located next to Albertsons Stadium at Boise State University. We will post additional information regarding the logistics of the regional spelling bee by February 1, 2019.
